The Georgia congresswoman said that her assailants “had no respect for the restaurant or the staff or the other people dining or people like me who simply have different political views,” calling them “self righteous, insane, and completely out of control.”
Greene bemoaned in a late-Monday tweet, “People used to respect others even if they had different views. But not anymore. Our country is gone.”
The ferocious Georgia Republican is used to being physically assaulted and threatened with violence. A 51-year-old New Yorker admitted responsibility earlier this month for repeatedly sending threatening voicemails on Greene’s phone.
According to the voicemail, “I just don’t think I can go on letting you, you know, cause hatred and poison to people. I really think I’m gonna have to cause you harm — physical harm. l’m gonna have to take your life into my own hands. I’m gonna hurt you. Physically, I’m gonna harm you.”
The sender of the voicemail, Joseph Morelli, is subject to a $250,000 maximum fine and a possible sentence of 5 years in jail. On June 1, he will be sentenced.
