Expensive Mistake: US Tourist Chucks Scooter Down Iconic Spanish Steps

Two American visitors were penalized after one was captured on film flinging an electric scooter down Rome’s Spanish Steps, causing more than $26,000 in damage to the world-famous structure.

The pair was eventually apprehended by local authorities and fined $430 apiece. The monument was likewise closed to the two Americans. According to Corriere Della Sera, they were subsequently permitted to return to their hotel while their scooters were impounded.

The event occurred two weeks after a 37-year-old Saudi Arabian engineer driving a rented Maserati SUV down the Spanish Steps.

When the traveler was apprehended by Milan police a few days later, he blamed the event on his GPS equipment, claiming it had led him down the incorrect street. The unidentified guy was charged with causing damage to the monument and promised to pay for its restoration.

Officials stated the luxury car shattered the 16th and 29th steps of the monument, as well as damaged other parts of the stairs.

The Spanish Steps received a $1.6 million repair in 2015 to restore its appearance to that of Pope Benedict XIII’s unveiling in 1725.
