White House Officials Discuss End to Yemen – Saudi Conflict
The nine-year struggle between Saudi Arabia and a Yemeni militia that Iran backs could soon come to an end. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, and President Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, spoke over the phone about long-term solutions.
Although President Biden and the Crown Prince do not have the same views on human rights issues or oil production plans, ending the bloody conflict has been one of Biden’s top priorities. The Biden Administration dispatched numerous American officials to follow up on the situation after being encouraged by how well the negotiations with the Yemen organization were going.
Tim Lenderking, Biden’s Special Envoy for Yemen, will visit Riyadh, the Saudi capital, to meet with Saudi officials. William Burns, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States, has previously traveled to the Middle Eastern nation to speak with its intelligence personnel.
In Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, representatives from the warring parties met to explore possible peace talks. Following joint visits by Iranian and Saudi Arabian officials to China in March, when they reached an agreement to mend diplomatic relations between the two nations, their discussions took off.
The success of the summit, according to Chinese officials in Beijing, served as evidence of their country’s diplomatic prowess. China presents itself as a major player with sway over Middle East issues by highlighting successful discussions between the two camps. The administration of President Biden attributes the beginnings of peace to prior discussions between the two sides, deflecting credit away from China.
Biden’s relationship with Saudi Arabia has fluctuated, from campaign pledges to hold the nation accountable for problems with oil production and price increases to a fist-bump welcome for the Crown Prince on an official Presidential visit to the Middle Eastern country. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a Republican, stated that everyone would profit from peace in that region of the world.
