Democratic Senator Announces His Upcoming Retirement

In the president’s home state, a Democratic senator has declared he won’t seek reelection in 2024.

Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware announced his intention to retire after 2024 in a statement on Monday.

“It was Joe Biden who encouraged me to run for the Senate when I was in my last year as governor. He has encouraged me every step of the way in my career. I Iook forward to continuing to work with Joe and Kamala to keep delivering for the American people,” Carper said.

During a press conference, Carper also revealed his retirement details.

“After a good deal of prayer and introspection and more than a few heart-to-heart conversations, we decided I should do neither,” Carper said that there might be a run the next year before riding off into the distance.

He continued, “But rather, I should run through the tape in the next 20 months and finish the important work that my staff and I have begun on a wide range of fronts.”

Republicans are waiting to find out whether Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) will declare his candidacy for reelection in addition to Caper. If that were the case, he would compete against the state’s well-liked GOP governor in a contest the GOP expects to win to flip the seat.

The likelihood of the GOP retaking control of the Senate is continuing to rise, but much will depend on the GOP nominee in terms of how much support other candidates will receive. Donald Trump, the former president, is currently ahead in the polls, perhaps setting up a rematch for 2020.
